Job or Career?

I used to think I'd work solely to make money until Ryan and I decided to have a family. While this sounded ideal, not many young couples are able to survive on one salary comfortably for much longer than their maternity leave. After this realization, I decided to change my mindset. Instead of assuming that I'd immediately be a stay-at-home mom I began to think of providing a comfortable life for our kids. Instead of thinking of a job as just a job, I decided to start thinking about what will actually bring me satisfaction.

After months of soul searching and trying to discover what makes me most happy I found that making a direct impact in other's life is what always brings a smile to my face. After discovering this, I looked primarily for non-profits organizations. It's not an easy process even if your looking for positions outside the non-profit sector but after months interviewing, I decided it was time to be picky with my choices. The need to be selective came from past employment that brought stress, dissatisfaction and frustration. Although it may have made me more money, I wasn't even able to enjoy it because I was so stressed out and my relationships began to suffer.

After meeting with the staff of Dreamcatchers, I knew this was it. It was the organization that I had been looking for. I have always had a soft spot for those with mental illnesses and physical limitations. Being able to give them a job and an improved quality of life is pretty mind blowing. Im extremely honored to attempt to make an impact in these individuals lives and increase their motivation. Cheers to having a great 2014 and may you always realize that your job no matter what it is, is meaningful if you search for that meaning.
